Feedback summary
My previous post shows how after watching my groups film clip my audience filled in my questionnaire about my work. The information Iv collected off this will help me with my evaluation. For example: several people stated that a soundtrack could be a improvement therefore I will discuss this is my evaluation and take this feedback into consideration for my main task. Even though, some of the questionnaires had very little/brief feedback, we discussed my work as a class and I took notes on people comments, which again will help me to evaluate my work.
Audience feedback
So that I can get feedback to help me improve my preliminary work I have created questionnaires for my audience to fill in whilst watching the film extract my group have produced. Not only will this help me with my prelim task but my final coursework too.
Audience feedback Questionnaire:
1. Could you spot all three techniques? (match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule) If not which ones did you spot, if any?
2. Did the extract show continuity?
3. Do you recommend any improvements?
4. What did we do well in our preliminary extract?
Once the results have been handed back I will post them on my blog to show my plans for improvement.

Initial ideas
For our initial ideas we have decided to keep mise-en-scene and sound basic due to the main emphasis being on the three techniques we need to include. We will focus on the editing with the use of match on action and shot reverse shot, and we will use the 180 degree rule as part of our cinematography. In our extract we will use other camera movements such as tracking and camera shots like close-up and two shot.
The basics of our mise-en-scene will be set in the living room of a suburban house, the costume will be plain with use of casual clothes, and the props will be everyday items such as: sofa, Ipad, cushion, television and remote. Finally, for the lighting we will constantly use high key light to prevent the creation of tension and mystery. Our extract is mainly focusing on the editing and cinematography and not the atmosphere of the extract.
Very little sound will be used in our extract: we will have dialogue of the characters during the shot reverse shot and background diegetic sounds such as the television and the opening of the door.
The main aim of the task will be to create continuity.

Preliminary Task- techniques- shot reverse shot

3) Shot reverse shot:
This shot can often be used in a conversation to show the emotions of the individuals in the conversation. The camera is either shown from one characters point of view or from over the shoulder, the camera shot is then reversed to show the other characters perspective. During a conversation shot reverse shot will go from one view to another (it often follows the 180 degree rule to prevent confusion in the audience)
On the right, I drew a little diagram to briefly show what it would look like.

Preliminary Task- techniques- match on action
2) Match on action:
is used to give the impression of continuous time. One shot cuts to another shot to create the feeling the transition flows and the subject/characters is continuously moving. For our prelim task we will use a match on action when filming a character walking through a doorway. We will film the character each side of the door to show the movement from one location/room to another. This technique creates a visual bridge which disguises and continuity error in the two cuts.

Roles and responsibilities
As working in part of a team it is important to establish key roles to ensure the work is complete effectively but fairly.
1. Molly Painter (me):
My role is to record the majority of the footage in the prelim task mainly due to Lucy and Martha being filmed in the extract. We made the decision to have Lucy and Martha in the extract as they both took & passed GCSE drama. Furthermore, I have practiced using the camera a lot at GCSE so I'm used to using the equipment, yet we will all share the responsibility of filming. I also was responsible for the general organization of the filming to ensure everything is in place, we decided upon this as I'm good at coordinating the group.
2. Lucy Malkin:
Lucy's, role was is to ensure all the equipment is prepared to use. So Lucy will ensure all the forms are signed to take responsibility for the colleges equipment, she will collect the equipment and make sure it is ready for use, for example the video recorder is fully charged. Lucy will take responsibility oft the video recorder and tripod to make sure nothing is damaged or miss placed and all equipment is handed back for the deadline date.
3. Martha Dale:
Martha's role is mainly focusing on the editing of the footage, we have decide this will be a god role for Martha as she has had lots of practice and is very precise in ensuring the extract will have continuity. However, again we will all take part on the editing as it's important to get the whole groups opinion and to ensure we all learn the editing skills.

Preliminary Task- techniques- 180 degree rule
1) The 180 degree rule:
This is when a line of action is created due to the interaction of the characters and/or subjects. The camera has to stay one side of the line, and footage has to be taken in the 180 degree arc around the line. This is done to prevent confusion and disorientation in the audience.
If the axis is crossed it is called 'jumping the line' or 'crossing the line' it could stop continuity of the filming. The only time the line is crossed is to create an effect (sense of confusion).

Preliminary Task
In Alevel Media Studies I have been given a Preliminary Coursework Task, this is to help familiarise myself with the equipment, software and general organisation. The task involves producing a 30 second extract, in which one character should enter a room to meet another where dialogue should be exchanged between the two characters. In this footage three techniques should be used: match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.
